5 out of 5 stars Hitchhiking Away   February 15, 2006

OK. So we know the Ultimate Edition of the Ultimate guide is leather bound with golden edge pages and built in book mark. But guess what, a real galactic hitchhiker would have a tattered, dirty, paperback version that he uses as a pillow so all of that means squat. Its what's inside that counts. Not to knock a nice volume such as this but do you really need all those bells and whistles? I'd rather talk about the story inside.

I won't try to sum up the plot, especially of all five books. That would be impossible or at least very improbable. But I will tell you that it is a comedy/sci-fi experience not to be missed. Douglas Adams breaks every rule in the book to bring us a nutty tale that spans all of time and and the galaxy. You'll meet characters the likes of which you'll see nowhere else. Two headed ego maniacs, depressed robots, an english man in his house coat, a girl who's feet are literally off the ground.

While it seems the first 3 books of this 5 part trilogy are typically veiwed as the best and core story, I do particularly like So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, the 4th. They are all dead pan english humor such as Shaun of the Dead or The Office. The kind that the longer you think about it the funnier it gets.

These stories will never get the same review. There is simultaneously to little and too much plot and to little and too much of everything else too. I loved these. But its like liver, either you love it or hate it. Give it a try and if you like humor and sci-fi I'll bet you just might get a kick out of it.

5 out of 5 stars Best 5 novel trilogy ever written.   February 4, 2006

Leather covers and built in bookmarks are all well and good, but these alone are not a reason to buy a book. The point is that these books are hilarious and well worth reading over and over again. (Most of the humor doesn't translate well to film though, so read the books they are MUCH better). Love the stories, glad to have found an edition that will last.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent edition   December 27, 2005
It was the leather cover and silk bookmark that attracted me to this version. The book has gold edged pages. If you were to buy all of these in paperback editions, you'd spend more than the price of this book, so I highly recommend this one with the leather and bookmark.

As for the content, I am having a great time reading this book. It is my first Douglas Adams (long overdue!), and I am thoroughly enjoying it. It is filled with irreverent quirky humor, and scattered with practical insights about the world, our perception of it, and what it all means (or doesn't). It's an easy read, although I do think his penchant for split infinitives slows me down a bit. Still, his style is otherwise conversational, funny, and quickly endearing.

Not the best Sci Fi I have ever read, but certainly some of the most fun.

5 out of 5 stars It's all here...   December 13, 2005
The ULTIMATE Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy. The ULTIMATE edition. This one has everything in it. All 5 novels are present and accounted for, and the short story is here too. Except for The Salmon Of Doubt, which is the first 11 chapters of what was ment to be the last book, its all here. The book itself has a thick leatherbound hardcover. You should probaly get some sticker remover because they stick stickers all over it, and I know you dont want stickers on your pretty new leather book. It has a built on bookmark. The pages are lined in gold. The pages are pretty thin, but then agian its suppose to be like a bible. Not as thin as bible pages and the font is bigger, but still thin compaired to other books. A very good low price here too, I recommed for anyone who wants to read these stories. You may even want to buy it for the amazing presentation it comes with.
