Editorial Reviews:

Description
Harrison Ford stars as Jack Ryan in PATRIOT GAMES, an explosive thriller based on Tom Clancy's international best-seller. His days as an intelligence agent behind him, former CIA analyst Jack Ryan has traveled to London to vacation with his wife (Archer) and child (Birch). Meeting his family outside of Buckingham Palace, Ryan is caught in the middle of a terrorist attack on Lord Holmes (Fox), a member of the Royal Family. Ryan helps to thwart Holmes' assailants and becomes a local hero. But Ryan's courageous act marks him as a target in the sights of the terrorist (Bean) whose brother he killed. Now Ryan must return to action for the most vital assignment of his life -- to save his family.

Amazon.com essential video
Let's see--he's been Han Solo in three films and Indiana Jones in three more. So why shouldn't Harrison Ford take on a new continuing character in Tom Clancy's CIA analyst Jack Ryan? In this film, directed by Phillip Noyce, Ford picked up the baton when Alec Baldwin, who played Ryan in The Hunt for Red October, opted for a Broadway role instead. In this film, Ryan and his family are on vacation when Ryan saves a member of the British royal family from attack by Irish terrorists. The next thing he knows, the Ryan clan has been targeted by the same terrorists, who invade his Maryland home. The film can't shed all of Clancy's lumbering prose, or his techno-dweeb fascination with spy satellites and the like. But no one is better than Ford at righteous heroism--and Sean Bean makes a suitably snakey villain. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Patriot Games [Blu-ray]   October 4, 2008
I'm a Harrison fan, already owned the movie on DVD. After reading the Blu-ray reviews and a cheap price on sale at Amazon I could help but add this to my new Blu-Ray collection. The menu system for the movie is not as good as some Blu-Ray movies I have. Not sure why, it would frezze my unit if I tried to change the sound, etc. from the opening menu. As I can access the menu once the movie is playing that worked fine. The sound and picture were great considering how old this film is. It was nice to watch it again in Blu-ray on a HD projector and see the improvement over the regular DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Special Collector's Edition--Excellent anamorphic widescreen transfer to DVD   August 26, 2008
Paramount's 'Special Collector's Edition' (part of their "Widescreen Collection") is the edition to purchase--whether you already own the previous letterbox release or not. This version looks and sounds fantastic! Presented in anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for 16 x 9 aspect ratio, large-screen TVs), the picture is crystal clear, sharp, great colors, and free of any analog defects (lines, specks, etc.). If you have a large screen, high-definition TV, you already know how annoying a "letterbox" format can be--this DVD release is a vast improvement over the earlier letterbox version of this Tom Clancy thriller. Played on my Toshiba 1080p HD DVD player, the image was nearly high defintion in quality. Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Good movie; what is wrong with this Blu Ray?   August 7, 2008

I also had trouble playing the disc. I takes a huge time to load and than usually stops playing after a short while. I thought of asking for a new copy but it seems that there are more problems with this release.

3 out of 5 stars Flashes of light?   August 4, 2008
I agree that this Blu-ray could have been done a lot better but it is a definite improvement from the SD version. If you are a fan of this movie and HD this is the best you are going to get for at least a while so you have to take it or leave it. I don't regret buying it. I don't know what some of these other reviews are talking about with flashes of light, etc. I have two different players and a 60" and 40" screen and I didn't see any of that on either of them.
